BACKWARD GUITAR SOLO
Thanks to Brian Greenway for this explanation in response to a question on the AW Discussion list.
"Backwards guitar solos are not what they seem to imply.
The technique used is: 1st, you know that your going to do a
backwards solo or guitar line. Next you work out the part. Solos should
be like a melody in the song. It should say something. Start somewhere
and end on a statement. Positive. Now with backwards solos you start in
reverse, meaning you play the end first and the beginning last, only
your not playing it backwards. That comes later. When you are satisfied
with what you hear, now this is the fun and tricky part, you play the
tape backwards, and voila, the solo is now ,you guessed it, backwards.
There is more to it than just that. I don't think you can do this with
digital machines. This was all invented in the analog days. You would
record the solo onto another two track machine from the 24 or what
ever track deck and then reverse the two tracks and play it back in
sync with the 24. Once you got it locked up (in sync)you would
transfer it back to the 24. You could do the same with a 24 track
digital, but I believe you would still need a 2 track analog deck to be
able to play the tape in reverse to get the effect. Even if it could
be done completely on digital you would still need two decks, and be
able to lock up the two together."
