COMMENTS:

ON RECORD 1972

1. FARKUS [M. Goodwyn] 2. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY [E. Brown, T. Wilson] 3. BELIEVE IN ME [M. Goodwyn] 4.WORK ALL DAY [M. Goodwyn] 5.DROP YOUR GUNS [D. Henman] 6.BAD SIDE OF THE MOON [E. John, B. Taupin] 7.REFUGE [D. Henman] 8. FLOW RIVER FLOW [M. Goodwyn] 9. CARRY ON [M. Goodwyn] 10.DIDN'T YOU [ J. Clench]
COMMENTS:
  • After the success of FAST TRAIN, the next album took on more of a "mainstream radio" sound. "Our first taste of commercial success with the single FAST TRAIN changed our thinking.", explains David Henman. "For me, for example, I thought "okay, I can do that", only to discover that it is MUCH easier to write music that is highly "personal" than it is to write a song that the average person can identify with. since then I've developed much more respect for "commercial" music, even the most insipid stuff. I may not like much of it, but I respect it."
  • COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY becomes a hit and still sounds great, usually showing up during the encore of recent shows. It was a cover of a moderate hit for the group Hot Chocolate. Picked up in the U.S. on a label called Big Tree, it reaches the Top 30 on the American charts. The producer, Ralph Murphy, sings the "na na na na".
  • The curious "noise" between tracks was added by the producer after the fact. According to Henman the band was "shocked" when they first heard it. "I don't think any of us liked it. What the intention was, what it was supposed to convey, I'm still not sure." he added.
  • The riff for DROP YOUR GUNS was inspired by SHINE ON by Humble Pie.
  • Harrison Tabb, whom the album was dedicated to, was a black R & B singer from Montreal who died in a tragic car accident and was close friend of David Henman.

ELECTRIC JEWELS 1974

1. WEEPING WIDOW [R. Wright] 2. JUST LIKE THAT [M. Goodwyn}, J. Clench] 3. ELECTRIC JEWELS [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 4. YOU OPENED MY EYES [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 5. COME ON ALONG [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 6. LADY RUN, LADY HIDE [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 7. I CAN HEAR YOU CALLING [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 8. CAT'S CLAW [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 9. THE BAND HAS JUST BEGUN [M. Goodwyn, J. Clench]
COMMENTS:
  • On the move, with the singles WEEPING WIDOW and ELECTRIC JEWELS, hitting the road on the ELECTRIC ADVENTURE tour. Big show with lots of things blowing up. Interesting story behind the back cover of the album. Seems the man in the back ground with the dog turned out to the slumped man's son searching in the night for him. It was inadvertently captured on film.
  • It's original title was ELECTRIC JULES but was later changed.
  • When David Henman left the group, his songs were dropped from the album. One, ROCK N' ROLL DEBUTANTE was later recorded when he was with The Dudes. The title was inspired by a roadie's comment that Henman was a becoming a "rock 'n' roll prima donna". Several years later he formed the Debutantes, "a glam rock band in the tradition of the New York Dolls."

LIVE 1974

1. MAMA, IT'S TRUE,[M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 2. DRUTHERS[M. Goodwyn, J.Clench] 3. CAT'S CLAW[M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 4. I'M ON FIRE FOR YOU BABY[D. Elliot] 5. THE BAND HAS JUST BEGUN[M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 6. GOOD VIBES[J. Mercer] 7. JUST LIKE THAT[M. Goodwyn, J. Clench] 8. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY[E. Brown,T. Wilson]
COMMENTS:
  • MAMA, IT'S TRUE, DRUTHERS and I'M ON FIRE... never appear on a studio album although I'M ON FIRE... was released as a single and finds it's way on to a greatest hits album.

STAND BACK 1975

1. OOWATANITE{J. Clench] 2. DON'T PUSH ME AROUND[M. Goodwyn] 3. CUM HEAR THE BAND[M. Goodwyn] 4. SLOW POKE[M. Goodwyn] 5. VICTIM FOR YOUR LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 6. BABY DONE GOT SOME SOUL[J. Clench] 7. I WOULDN'T WANT TO LOSE YOUR LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 8. HIGHWAY HARD RUN[M. Goodwyn] 9. NOT FOR YOU-NOT FOR ROCK N' ROLL[M. Goodwyn] 10. WOULDN'T WANT YOUR LOVE ANY OTHER WAY[M. Goodwyn] 11. TONITE IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO FALL IN LOVE[M. Goodwyn]

COMMENTS:
  • OOWATANITE, with what appears to be a clanging fire bell and rotating lights, became the standard opening song for concerts. It actually is a school bell and created quite a stir as bells began disappearing from local schools. Another highlight was the firing of a cannon such as the one pictured on the album cover. TONITE IS A WONDERFUL TIME.. is another hit and is later reworked for release on FRIGATE. DON'T PUSH ME AROUND proves to be a enduring song and shows up on the HARDER...FASTER tour with a harmonica solo by Brian Greenway.
OOWATANITE LIVE***224k(zipped)
A rare live recording that was featured on the flip side of a Ladies Man single. Goodwyn on lead vocals.

THE WHOLE WORLD'S GOIN' CRAZY 1976

1. GIMME LOVE[M. Goodwyn, H. Hagopian] 2. SO BAD[M. Goodwyn] 3. WINGS OF LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 4. WE CAN BE MORE THAN WE ARE[M. Goodwyn, J. Henman] 5. ROCK N' ROLL WOMAN[M. Goodwyn] 6. SHOT DOWN[M. Goodwyn] 7. LIKE A LOVER, LIKE A SONG[M. Goodwyn] 8. KICK WILLY RD.[M. Goodwyn] 9. THE WHOLE WORLD'S GOIN' CRAZY[M. Goodwyn]
COMMENTS:
  • Two versions of this album were released. The original, listed above, and later a second with a few changes. WE CAN BE MORE THAN WE ARE was dropped. In it's place, two songs were added-CHILD'S GARDEN and MARJORIE. Both songs also appear on the album FOREVER FOR NOW. Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush fame plays a spirited guitar on the track SO BAD.
  • The CD release contained one of many shortened versions of LIKE A LOVER... Left off was the guitar solo and a verse.
  • It's the first Canadian album to ship platinum(100,000 copies).
  • A memorable stage show included 16 foot model of the Mad Hatter pictured on the cover traveling in its own truck.
GIMME LOVE LIVE***208k(zipped)
Another rare live recording, this time on the flipside of a She's No Angel single.

LIKE A LOVER...Guitar solo***266k(zipped)
Here's the solo that was left off the CD release.

FOREVER FOR NOW 1977

1. FOREVER FOR NOW [M. Goodwyn] 2. CHILD'S GARDEN[M. Goodwyn] 3. LOVIN' YOU[M. Goodwyn] 4. HOLLY WOULD[M. Goodwyn] 5. YOU WON'T DANCE WITH ME[M. Goodwyn] 6. COME AWAY[G. Bowser, P. Jupp] 7. MAMA LAYE[M. Goodwyn] 8. I'D RATHER BE STRONG[M. Goodwyn] 9. HARD TIMES[J. Dean, M. Goodwyn] 10. MARJORIE[M. Goodwyn]
COMMENTS:
  • A Goodwyn solo project becomes April Wine's 7th album. A good reason to shift gears to more productive rock albums. Certainly, the most unusual collection of April Wine songs ever recorded.

LIVE AT THE EL MOCAMBO 1977

1. TEENAGE LOVE[B. Segarini] 2. TONITE IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO FALL IN LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 3. JUVENILE DELINQUENT[B. Segarini] 4. DON'T PUSH ME AROUND[M. Goodwyn] 5. OOWATANITE[J. Clench] 6. DROP YOUR GUNS[D. Henman] 7. SLOW POKE[M. Goodwyn] 8. SHE'S NO ANGEL[M. Goodwyn, G. Moffet] 9. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY[E. Brown, T. Wilson]
COMMENTS:
  • Recorded at a local club, they became the opening act for The Cockroaches, a band better known as the Rolling Stones. Featured a rare lead vocal performance by bassist Steve Lang on OOWATANITE.Two tracks, TEENAGE LOVE and JUVENILE DELINQUENT, do not appear on any studio album. Two versions of this album were produced. The second contains a live version of YOU WON'T DANCE WITH ME instead of SHE'S NO ANGEL.
  • It almost didn't happen as Keith Richards was busted at the Harbour Castle Hotel and charged with possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking. Also scandal arises as Margaret Trudeau, the wife of the Canadian Prime Minister is spotted at the club. She's also caught in the company of Stones later that weekend.
  • The album had also served as a vehicle to expose previously released songs to U.S. audiences. Since song rights was owned by the record company, a live recording was away to rerelease some of the classics.

FIRST GLANCE 1978

1. GET READY FOR LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 2. HOT ON THE WHEELS OF LOVE[M. Goodwyn, T. Lang] 3. ROCK N' ROLL IS A VICIOUS GAME[M. Goodwyn] 4. RIGHT DOWN TO IT[B. Greenway] 5. ROLLER[M. Goodwyn] 6. COMIN' RIGHT DOWN ON TOP OF ME[M. Goodwyn] 7. I'M ALIVE[M. Goodwyn] 8. LET YOURSELF GO[M. Goodwyn] 9. SILVER DOLLAR[M. Goodwyn]
COMMENTS:
  • Enter Brian Greenway, adding a third guitar to the lineup, arriving halfway through the recording sessions.
  • The album was nicknamed "Last Chance" as cracking the U.S. market was getting more difficult all the time. ROLLER finally scores, hitting the Top 40 and earning AW their first U.S. gold album with sales in excess of 500,000.
  • What I refer to as the "Country/Western" album.

HARDER... FASTER 1979

1. I LIKE TO ROCK[M.Goodwyn] 2. SAY HELLO[M. Goodwyn] 3. TONITE[M. Goodwyn] 4. LADIES MAN[M. Goodwyn] 5. BEFORE THE DAWN[ B. Greenway] 6. BABES IN ARMS[M. Goodwyn] 7. BETTER DO IT WELL[G. Moffet, M. Goodwyn] 8. 21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN[Frip, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield]
COMMENTS:
  • Rumor has it the album name was inspired by a famous porn movie. The equally famous star's limited vocabulary is said to be imortalized at the end of the last track. SCHIZOID MAN was rearranged from the King Crimson classic.
  • The band's popularity took off in Europe as I LIKE TO ROCK became an anthem at concerts and their first charted single in the U.K.

NATURE OF THE BEAST 1981

1. ALL OVER TOWN[M. Goodwyn] 2. TELLIN' ME LIES[M. Goodwyn] 3. SIGN OF THE GYPSY QUEEN[L. Hud] 4. JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME[M. Goodwyn] 5. WANNA ROCK[M. Goodwyn] 6. CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE[M. Goodwyn] 7. FUTURE TENSE[M. Goodwyn] 8. BIG CITY GIRLS[M. Goodwyn] 9. CRASH AND BURN[M. Goodwyn] 10. BAD BOYS[M. Goodwyn] 11. ONE MORE TIME[M. Goodwyn]
COMMENTS:
  • Moffet's backward guitar solo on ALL OVER TOWN needs some explanation and herehere it is. In concert, Goodwyn elaborated on the "I don't care" line from the song, stopping the band. He then pulled up a stool and explained his displeasure.
  • ALL OVER TOWN LIVE***216k(zipped)
Still another rare live recording, sharing the flip side with a studio version single.

    POWER PLAY 1982

    1. ANYTHING YOU WANT, YOU GOT IT[M. Goodwyn] 2. ENOUGH IN ENOUGH[M. Goodwyn] 3.IF YOU SEE KAY[D. Freeland] 4. WHAT IF WE FALL IN LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 5. WAITING ON A MIRACLE[M. Goodwyn] 6. DOIN' IT RIGHT[T. Lavin] 7. AIN'T GOT YOUR LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 8. BLOOD MONEY[M. Goodwyn] 9. TELL ME WHY[J. Lennon, P. McCartney] 10. RUNNERS IN THE NIGHT[M. Goodwyn]
    COMMENTS:
    • Introduces a new concert opening song in ANYTHING YOU WANT... IF YOU SEE KAY spawns a little controversy with it's clever play on words.

    ANIMAL GRACE 1984

1.THIS COULD BE THE RIGHT ONE[M. Goodwyn] 2. SONS OF THE PIONEERS[M. Goodwyn] 3. WITHOUT YOUR LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 4. ROCK TONITE[M. Goodwyn] 5. HARD ROCK KID[T. Lang, M. Goodwyn, M. Stone] 6.MONEY TALKS[M. Goodwyn] 7. GIMME THAT THING CALLED LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 8. TOO HOT TO HANDLE[M. Goodwyn] 9. LAST TIME I'LL EVER SING THE BLUES[M. Goodwyn]

    COMMENTS:
    • Underrated effort. First three songs are classics featuring April Wine's diverse musical styles. Last of Moffet and Lang.
    • THIS COULD BE THE RIGHT ONE was thought to be big hit but after a strong start for the first few weeks, it dropped fast.

    ONE FOR THE ROAD 1985

1.ANYTHING YOU WANT, YOU GOT IT 2.I LIKE TO ROCK 3. ALL OVER TOWN 4. JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME 5. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH 6. THIS COULD BE THE RIGHT ONE 7. SIGN OF THE GYPSY QUEEN 8. LIKE A LOVER,LIKE A SONG 9. COMIN' RIGHT DOWN ON TOP OF ME 10. ROCK N' ROLL IS A VICIOUS GAME. 11. ROLLER.

    COMMENTS:
    • This album is a perfect example of April Wine concert frustration-too many great songs-too little time. Goodwyn nicely runs songs 8, 9 &10 together during a keyboard interlude.

    WALKING THROUGH FIRE 1986

    1. ROCK MYSELF TO SLEEP[K. Rew, V. de la Cruz] 2.WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE[J. Cannata, M. Soldan] 3. BEG FOR YOUR LOVE[E. Schwartz] 4. LOVE HAS REMEMBERED ME[M. Goodwyn] 5. ANEJO[M. Goodwyn] 6. OPEN SOUL SURGERY[J. Vallance] 7. YOU DON'T HAVE TO ACT THAT WAY[M. Goodwyn] 8.HOLD ON[M. Goodwyn] 9. ALL IT WILL EVER BE[M. Goodwyn] 10. WAIT ANY MORE[M. Goodwyn]

    COMMENTS:
    • Contract album. ROCK MYSELF... written by two members of Katrina and the Waves. Only Goodwyn and Greenway play on the album, with session musicians making up the rest of the band.

    ATTITUDE 1993

    1.GIVIN' IT, TAKIN' IT[M. Goodwyn] 2. GOOD FROM FAR, FAR FROM GOOD[M. Goodwyn] 3. IF YOU BELIEVE IN ME[S. Gray, T. Kennedy] 4.THAT'S LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 5.IT HURTS[M. Goodwyn] 6.HOUR OF NEED[M. Goodwyn] 7. HERE'S LOOKIN' AT YOU KID[M. Goodwyn] 8.BETTER SLOW DOWN[S. Segal, M. Goodwyn] 9.STRANGE KING OF LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 10. CAN'T TAKE ANOTHER NITE[B. Greenway, J. Nystrom] 11. LUV YOUR STUFF[M. Goodwyn] 12. EMOTIONAL DREAMS[M. Goodwyn] 13. VOICE IN MY HEART[S. Gray, T. Kennedy] 14. GIRL IN MY DREAMS[M. Goodwyn]

    COMMENTS:
    • Surprise, Surprise. Back at it again. Marks the return of former bassist Jim Clench and introducing Steve Segal, replacing Moffet on guitar. Nice range of music from mellow to rock. Personal favorite-THAT'S LOVE.

    FRIGATE 1994

    1.LOOK INTO THE SUN[M. Goodwyn] 2. I JUST WANNA MAKE LOVE TO YOU[Dixon & Dixon] 3. IF I WAS A STRANGER[W. Rathie, T. Rathie, E. Stevens] 4. TONITE IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO FALL IN LOVE[M. Goodwyn] 5. NOTHIN' BUT A KISS[M. Goodwyn] 6.I'M A MAN[S. Winwood, J. Miller] 7.WHATEVER IT TAKES[B. Greenway, M. Goodwyn] 8. DRIVIN' WITH MY EYES CLOSED[M. Goodwyn] 9.HARD TO BELIEVE[M. Goodwyn] 10. KEEP ON ROCKIN'[M. Goodwyn] 11. MIND OVER MATTER[M. Goodwyn]

    COMMENTS:
    • Great rewrite of TONITE IS A WONDERFUL... Contractual problems with FRE hinder this effort. A new CD is in the works but a previously announced release date, on their own label, has been pushed back.
