Andreas at AgamemCon 3

Intro logo

Born May 18, 1946, actor Andreas Katsulas originally hails from St. Louis, MO, of working-class Greek and American heritage. He became hooked on acting when he was 4 years old and his mother took him to a local community theater. After high school he attended St. Louis University, paying his way through school with various jobs, including waiting on tables. He ended up earning a drama fellowship at University of Indiana, Bloomington (considered one of the top 6 schools of theatre in the nation) where he received his masters in theater arts.

Upon completion of his degree he performed with the St. Louis (Loretto-Hilton) Repertory Theater and then with the Theatre Company of Boston. At that time he moved to New York City and began work in truly innovative theater at the avante-garde off-off-broadway theater La Mama. Ellen Stewart recommended Andreas to Peter Brook, who was starting a new experimental theatre troupe in Paris. Andreas stayed with Brook and the other actors for 15 years despite times, such as the "Conference of the Birds" tour of Africa, when he wanted to quit out of frustration and sheer exhaustion. He considered his time with Brook as an "unparalleled" experience, recalling Brook tell the troupe to "aspire to the character."

Andreas at DragonCon 2000 During one hiatus director Michael Cimino cast Andreas in the movie "The Sicilian", a small part that was throughout the picture. Andreas was encouraged by Brook to use this opportunity as a springboard to movies and he moved to Los Angeles. Within weeks he had an agent and another role in "Someone To Watch Over Me". Even though he had done a few films prior to these two he stayed in Los Angeles to continue his craft.

Over the years Andreas had appeared in over 25 made-for-tv movies and feature films, from drama to action to comedy to science fiction, such as "King of America", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Communion", "The Fugitive", "Next of Kin", "Executive Decision", "Hot Shots! Part Deux", "Mafia!" and "A Piece of Eden".

He had appeared in over 15 television shows, including "Alien Nation", "Hunter", "Murder, She Wrote", "Max Headroom", "Millenium", "Enterprise", "NYPD Blue", and most notably as the character of G'Kar on "Babylon 5" and four episodes of "Star Trek:The Next Generation" as Romulan Commander Tomalak.

Andreas died February 13, 2006. He was 59 years old.

From the Babylon 5 moderated group I've learned that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will be presenting a short film of industry people who have passed on since the last Acadamy Awards. Since they also include people who passed recently they probably can add footage close to the broadcast, which will be on March 5.
It would be a wonderful tribute if Andreas was added to the reel. Let them know that you want to see him added by writing to them at:

It might be best to concentrate on his wide range of roles, not just science fiction. Check out the IMDb at:

15 February, 2006

Just over a year ago, Andreas Katsulas -- who loved smoking with a passion that cannot be described -- was diagnosed with lung cancer, which by then had already spread to other areas. He quit smoking at once and went on a healthy diet and vitamin program, but there was little hope of a good resolution even though the new regimen was very good for him. When we spoke about it, he laughed, and said, "Now that I'm dying I've never felt better!"

His spirits were always up and positive, putting everyone at ease about his condition, because...well, that's the kind of person he was.

A couple of months ago, he and his wife convened a dinner with me, Doug, and Peter Jurasik, which was filled with laughter and stories and good food. He wanted to know all the stories we never told him because, as he said, "Who am I going to tell?" So we did. Because we knew we were saying goodbye, and there would not be a second chance.

Last night, in the company of his wife and family, Andreas closed his eyes and went away.

He lived an amazing life...full of travel and wonder and good work...was part of the world renowned Peter Brook company...he saw the planet, loved and was loved, ate at great restaurants, smoked too many cigarettes...he lived a life some people would die for.

And, sadly, due to the last part of that equation...he did.

Memorial arrangements are still being worked out, but will doubtless be private.

Andreas is gone...and G'Kar with him, because no one else can ever play that role, or ever will.

I will miss him terribly.
