RAGGED LION JACK MICHELINE is one of America's best kept literary and artistic secrets. He spent 40 years on the streets of America until his death on a San Francisco BART train in February of 1998. He painted and wrote poetry and mingled with everyone from Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Mingus to Ken Kesey and Jack Kerouac. RAGGED LION recreates Jack Micheline's life and in the process paints a unique portrait of the Beat Generation as it was (not as the media hyped it) and as it exists now on the threshold of the Millennium. The book is beautifully crafted in hard cover and paperback editions and features essays, criticism, reminiscences, poetry, interviews and a profusion of art work and photography from 80 Beats and Beat affiliates, including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Hubert Selby, Jr., Chris Felver, Janice Blue, Charles Plymell, Andy Clausen, Jack Hirschman, Kaye McDonough, Ira Cohen, Alan Kaufman, Linda Lerner, Janine Pommy Vega, Steve Wilson, ruth weiss, Rick Librizzi, Neeli Cherkovski, Bob Feldman, Latif Harris, Matt Gonzalez, Bruce Isaacson, S.S. Kush, Jim Lang, Maj Ragain, Rich Mangelsdorff, Charles Potts, Kell Robertson, Jeffery Weinberg, Wayne Miller and Julia Vinograd. Click here or on the cover image for feedback on Ragged Lion. Rug Burn is made up of intense shard rap with musical counterpoint furnished by the hip-hop collective Log Hog. Eighteen steamy, hard-hitting cuts. Quantum leap material. An hour of fine listening. The performer Seed Verb of Log Hog has this to say about working with Bennett on Rug Burn: "What is remarkable is the ease with which we found an entraining tempo and applied it to these shards. I say "applied" because we began with a collection of shards on tape which Bennett had read acappella. We soon discovered that when a beat at the proper tempo was over-dubbed, the piece suddenly sounded like an ensemble effort, as if Bennett were actually there, reading to the beat. This is due in no small part to the fact that Bennett is an amazingly consistent and rhythmic reader; he has an uncanny sense of the intrinsic pace at which his shards should be read. It was never necessary for us to alter the flow of the vocal track. Some internal clock keeps John Bennett reading to a beat of which he's not even conscious." vag-001: $10.95 |
